Dahozho Selkirk Rex
Contact Us Established 1999, registering in TICA and CFA
In 1987, a curly kitten was found in a litter of domestic shorthairs in Western Wyoming. She found her way to a Persian breeder, who recognized and was intriged by the unusual coat. This cat was Miss Depesto of NoFace (1987-2000). "Pest," as she was known, had only four litters and few of those offspring became part of the Selkirk Rex foundation lines. In those breedings, Pest, a shorthaired tortie & white (or calico) was found to carry the longhair gene and the pointed color pattern (like Siamese). Because of her varied genetic makeup, Selkirks can be shorthaired or longhaired, and come in ALL COLORS and patterns.
In order to establish a healthy genepool in this breed, we currently use three outcross breeds: Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, and British Shorthairs. The last year for outcrosses is 2016, and then only with the British Shorthair. The only Persians and Exotics which should be used in a Selkirk Rex breeding program are "pet" quality-- i.e., they should have 'long' noses, as little doming as possible, not too cobby a body, and a higher earset than is seen on a show Persian/Exotic. If the cat is show quality but is known to produce 'pet' kittens, they are a good candidate for an outcross with Selkirks. I have used a shaded golden male with one of my girls, and the kitten was just lovely. (It should go without saying that any Persian/Exotic should be screened and negative for PKD, an inherited fatal kidney condition, and also have no heart problems.)
Selkirks are wonderful cats! Mine are sweet, quiet, and occasionally very silly! While they are not demanding cats or necessarily lapcats, they are interested in you & will follow you about the house, usually within arm's reach. They are calm cats with even temperments. They do love playtime, and will even invent games with their toys or occasionally scamper madly through the house. Their coats are plush, and they do have seasonal (spring & fall) shedding. These cats are NOT 'hypoallergenic!' They have the same full coats as regular cats, with three types of hair.
Selkirks come in all colors and patterns that a cat can come in! Here at Dahozho, we work with the Shorthaired variety, and we have been getting cream tabbies, red tabbies (with a shaded golden background), blue/cream and white, and will be having lilacs and lilac torties, with and without white, available in 2002.
